Career Placement Services Student Services Building, 2nd floor 956/381-2243 career_place@panam.edu How do I figure out what I want to do? How do I get a job without experience? How do I get experience without a job? What if I spend four years studying this and it turns out I hate it? How do I learn what it really means to be in this field? How do I beat the competitive job market after graduation? Most students at one time or another have asked themselves these questions. Co-op and internship programs can offer the student an opportunity to learn how to: Explore and clarify their major and career goals with professionals in the field Develop knowledge, competencies, and experiences to know that they are able to do the job and learn how to do it better Gain practical employment experience that employers look for when hiring college graduates Take responsibility for their own learning and crate a more rewarding college experience Establish a network of professional contacts, mentors, and references for after graduation Co-op experiences and internships provide the students with an opportunity to learn in a \"real world \" environment with professionals in their field. They develop key competencies, skills, and work characteristics that employers seek, including developing their communication and interpersonal skills and learn how to work with others. They can gain more confidence in their abilities and be better prepared to enter their chosen field. But finding the perfect internship takes time and effort. The staff at the Cooperative Education Program is here to assist the students in finding that ideal placement for the Fall, Spring or Summer semesters. Students begin by identifying their career goals. The staff provides assistance in how to research companies, qualifications, applications, resumes and preparing for interviews. Assistance is also provided on professional dress, dining etiquette and overall presentation of themselves. The goal is for the student to acquire that placement which may be the door that opens up their future career. The number of students taking part in internships or co-ops is expected to pass 200. This summer we are pleased to note many students are participating in internships and coops. Some of the companies students will intern at are Ford Motor Co., General Electric, Texas State Bank, Monsanto, Lockheed Martin, Fisher Controls, Raytheon, Dillard \'s Department Store, Wal-Mart Information Systems, Xerox, McAllen ISD, Boeing, Texas Instruments, and many other top local and nationwide organizations. Page 2 of 3 Who visited Bronc Country Bronc Career Connection Several organizations visited the University this past semester. We also offer the following tips for those students unable to jump-start their search. 1. Work your network. Tell friends and family members that you are looking for a job. 2. Consider a temporary assignment or contract work. 3. Consider \"stepping-stone \" jobs. 4. Consider graduate school or a second degree in a related field. 5. Think out of the box. Consider alternative careers in your major. By using the BCC, students are able to post their resume, review and apply for posted employment opportunities, register for career development workshops, sign up for on-campus interviews and much more. To register students and alumni need a UTPA Student ID and should have a resume which they will need to upload to the BCC. Log on today! http://careerservices.panam.edu How to Succeed in the 2nd Interview Ninety-nine percent of what applies to first interviews applies to any subsequent interviews, because you are usually meeting more people from the same company for the first time. The greatest difference is likely to be in the level of understanding that you have about the organization. There can be numerous variations; you may interview first with a human resources staff person and then be invited to return to meet several more people; you may have a successful recruiting interview and then be invited to the home office for the day to meet more people; you may in fact be speaking with one person and they may be so impressed that they immediately call a colleague and ask if that person has time to meet you. If time has passed before you are invited to return for further discussions, take the opportunity to reflect on your first conversation. The second interview is your opportunity to show that you have listened and learned. The more details you know about a position, the more successfully you can communicate your ability to meet its requirements. Think about what you know the employer is looking for and describe elements of your background and skills in such a way that you show that you have those specific qualifications. A candidate who can take information learned in a first interview and apply it in later interviews will be considered an astute observer and a quick study. If you have been saturated with information about the organization, position, training program, benefits and anything else that might apply, certainly your interviewers will understand if you do not have a long list of questions to ask. The preferred option, however, is to formulate a few new questions, perhaps more detailed or more sophisticated, based on what you have learned. Areas to pursue with more specific questions include, but are not limited to, the following: Further clarification of the position-responsibilities, projects, travel, how you would fit into the group. Further information about your prospective department-goals, career paths, training offered how it fits into the company \'s overall strategy. Further questions about the plans, expansion, direction of the company. As with a first interview, it is important to be attuned to the position of the person with whom you are speaking. On a day- or half-day-long series of interviews, you may have the opportunity to ask questions of someone who would be your peer, someone who would be your supervisor, a representative of the human resources office, and the president or director. They will each provide a different perspective and knowledge base. The following are some common interview questions that applicants often receive: What makes you different from the other candidates for this position? Describe the accomplishment of which you are the most proud. Why should we hire you? What strengths and attributes could you bring to this position? How did you select your concentration? Describe the course that has had the greatest impact on your thinking. How did you become involved in your extracurricular activities? The next sets of questions are those that an applicant can ask the interviewer: How would you describe your management style? Please describe the organizational culture. What type of projects or assignments could I expect as an intern/permanent staff? Will I be working in a number of different areas in the organization or mostly a specific area? Is there travel involved with this position? Can I progress at my own pace or is it structured? What are the primary results you would like to see me produce if offered this position? What is the average age of your first-level supervisors? Page 3 of 3 Spring 2005 A Look Back For the first time ever, the US Navy announced the launch of a South Texas University tour headlined by Latino rap artists Akwid and Inspector. The tour kicked off on March 1 at UTPA as part of a major effort to increase awareness of Navy opportunities for Hispanic college students. The U.S. Navy also had a strong presence at the 32nd annual Career Day (see photo on right). In addition to the concert the U.S. Navy \'s Rear Admiral Jose Luis Betancourt Jr., a Brownsville native and UTPA alumnus, made a visit to the campus where he participated in the Federal Panel Discussion as the keynote speaker, conducted a leadership seminar and also participated in the Networking Social. Students seeking internships or professional employment met with several businesses, government agencies and school districts at the 32nd annual Career Day. Raytheon, H.E.B. Grocery Co., Xerox, the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, Target Stores and the U.S. Navy were just some of the employers at the UTPA Fieldhouse. Representatives offered students and alumni information about employment opportunities and answered questions. The day before a Federal Panel Discussion was held as well as a Networking Social, where students met with recruiters in an informal setting. Students listened intently as Jesse Pisors from the campus dining provider, Sodexho, presented during the \"Dining Etiquette \" workshop held on March 29. About 30 students were provided with do \'s and don \'ts about proper dining. Students were then able to put what they learned to practice as they were treated to a formal lunch meal. The workshop was sponsored by Enterprise Rent-A-Car, who also conducted on-campus Mock Interviews with students. The Spring semester Teachers Job Expo hosted more than 80 school districts from across the country. Over 700 students and alumni attended the event held on April 7. Many districts had opportunities in all areas and were drawn to UTPA, which graduates the highest number of bilingual education graduates in the state, because of its high quality students. Some of the districts in attendance included: Mission CISD, Harlingen CISD, Laredo ISD, New Mexico Public Schools, Dallas ISD and Houston ISD. The health care industry is growing at an extremely rapid pace. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, about 16 percent of all new wage and salary jobs created between 2002 and 2012 will be in health services 3.5 million jobs, which is more than in any other industry. If the thought of meeting a room full of eager recruiters terrifies you, relax. You \'ll never have an easier time during your job hunt. \"Students feel like [a job fair] has all the pressure of an interview, but it \'s probably one of the least stressful job searching activities you can do, \" Kidd says. Benefits of an Internship If you \'re doing a summer internship, you \'ve probably learned to use the copier, the fax machine, the postage machine, and the office coffee maker. But if using office equipment is all you learn this summer, then you \'ve interned for the wrong company. Meghan Firster, coordinator of university relations at Westinghouse Electric Company, first tried her hand at recruiting, labor relations, HR generalist tasks, and writing job descriptions during her internship at Westinghouse a couple of years ago. When she returned to college for her senior year, she took along a better grasp of her college courses because she had performed many of the tasks her professors discussed. She also had an offer of a full-time job. Fisher states that hands-on experience is an important benefit of doing an internship. At the end of your internship, you should be able to say you \'ve used the technical skills you \'ve learned in college. An internship or participation in a co-op program adds a bit of magic to a student \'s resume. Sometimes a good experience can make up for a somewhat low grade point average. \"A couple of co-op rotations or an internship gives [a student] an edge, \" says Firster. An internship should be about learning on the job and about the job. You \'ll get hands-on experience that will help you in your classes and give you a clear picture of the career you think you \'re interested in pursuing. You \'ll learn about the company \'s culture and whether it is a good fit with your goals. It \'s important to go into your internship with an understanding of the kind of work you will be doing. And, on the job, \"you should learn more about your major and the work involved, \" says Firster. \"You should also learn about the company you \'re working for. \" Copyright © National Association of Colleges and Employers New Co-op/Internship Opportunities For additional information on all positions listed below please visit the Cooperative Education Program in the Student Services Bldg., Rm. 125 or email susiea@panam.edu. Getting a part-time job might be just the thing to get rid of those pesky zeros that keep showing up as your ATM balance. But there \'s more to part-time jobs than feeding your checkbook. The Benefits of Working Why work part-time in school? You \'re not just working toward that paycheck. Part-time jobs offer advantages you won \'t see on a pay stub. Working while in school can actually improve your college experience. Studies have shown that students working part-time in a work-study program generally do better than students who don \'t work at all. And you may find your grades improving as well. Nothing motivates you to invest in your coursework like working to put yourself through school. With both school and work on your \"to do \" list, you \'ll learn to budget your time and use it more productively. And if your job is on campus, you \'ll find even more benefits. Through your job, you \'ll be connected to your campus: You know what \'s going on and how the school works administratively. You \'ll forge connections with faculty and staff that can help you when need assistance with administrative or academic problems. Where and When to Look for a Job Visit the Student Employment Program in the Student Services Building, Rm. 153, and attend oncampus job fairs. Check for notices posted kiosks, bulletin boards and message boards located on campus. But don \'t start working until you have a finalized class schedule you want your work hours to be compatible with your academic life. Also, make sure you \'re adjusted to the college life before you start working. College is a completely new experience; don \'t add to your stress with a new job, too! Don \'t Settle for Just Any Job Early on, you may need to rely on \"typical \" part-time jobs - such as food service or light office work. And these jobs can provide skills and connections. Also, make sure that your job will fit with your lifestyle. The best student jobs offer a flexible work schedule, a casual dress code so you can go to work straight from class. A Word of Caution Don \'t get carried away! Before you accept that job offer, keep a few things in mind: · Earning too much can affect your funding. Working adds to the student \'s income reported on the FAFSA, which can lower the amount of financial aid they get. · Don \'t overload your schedule. Too many hours on the job will take away from study time. Experts recommend a maximum of 12-15 hours a week. · The money you earn may not be worth the time and money you spend getting to your job. Consider the costs of uniforms and transportation and the time it will take to get to your job before you decide. A part-time job can do a lot for you: it can keep down your debt, help you meet people and give you experience. Find out all the facts and see if being a working student is right for you. Resumes are key in job search process A good resume is vital. It \'s your calling card to a prospective employer - one that lays out your qualifications and hopefully gets you a job interview. Follow these guidelines to make sure your resume gets you noticed. Be sure to include these basics: Contact information, Education, Experience, Skills and other categories, if they are relevant, can include publications, awards, leadership positions or other notable achievements. There are many different ways to organize your resume. The most basic formats include: Chronological - to emphasize your work history; list your jobs and activities, beginning with your most recent experiences. Functional - to emphasize your skill sets, group your experiences under categorical headings, such as Leadership or Technology Support. The key is to pick a format that presents your achievements most effectively - as well as being easy to read and comprehend. See below for samples of a number of resume formats. Tips for a Winning Resume: Keep it brief; Provide meaningful descriptions of your experiences; Use strong action words; Use formatting to help you out; and always remember to proofread. Review your resume each time you want to submit it to an employer to make sure it fits the opportunity at hand. The final test: Take a look at your resume from arm \'s distance. Is it confusing and text-heavy? Or is it easy to find the information you need? Do whatever is needed to make your resume \"readerfriendly. \" Copyright © 2004 FastWeb, LLC. All rights reserved. Alumni Spotlight Veronica Molina Program Quality Engineer II Raytheon Company What are some of your main job duties at Raytheon? I work within the Customer Returned Material section of Raytheon supporting programs for various domestic and international customers. Our team receives radar systems from customers in which the products are damaged functionally or visually. My main role is to investigate along with the team, why the product comes back and what needs to be done to prevent the problem from reoccurring. What is your best memory from your time at UTPA? Some of my best memories include meeting and spending time with the new friends I met during college. Throughout the years, several of us always studied together and participated in engineering club activities, in which through all the studying and activities, we got to know more about each other and all became friends. Along with this, are the good memories of the Engineering Faculty who always made time for the students and welcomed us into their offices to discuss any issues we had. These are all acts/memories that stand out in my mind. What advice would you give UTPA students about finding a job? Aside from letting them know to try their best in school, such as in their grades, and in their participation in internships/coops which are very important, I would let them know to be persistent and follow up with companies that they would like to work for. Sometimes, employers are likely to remember your name and info if you make contact with them. Also, just because one company doesn \'t hire you, doesn \'t mean that there is something wrong with your qualifications. Just keep looking and be persistent with many different companies. ","null","null","");arrFiles[52]=new Array("careerplacement/students.html","The University of Texas Pan American - Division of External Affairs - Career Placement Services","External	Affairs Home | Search	| About Us | Contact	Us	| Make A Gift Home Students Employers Parents Alumni ContactUs News CareerConnection Career Placement Services is divided into three programs designed to	assist students throughout their time at The University of Texas-Pan	American. The skills I have developed from my work experience and	academic background support my strong interest in a sales	career. As you can see from my resume, the internship I	had with XYZ Corporation provided an opportunity for me to gain	practical experience with account maintenance and cold-calling	new accounts. In addition, I have worked as a waiter for the	past four years, learning firsthand how to effectively deal with	customers and their demands. The strides your company has taken in the computer	software market—namely the development of packages for use by	pharmacies and hospitals—make ABC a leader in the industry. What is the difference?	Business Professional Attire for Women	Women have more flexibility in the clothing choices than men,	which means they also have more room for mistakes. Limit	creativity to materials, patterns and cuts. Suitable	professional attire for women includes: dresses, suits, and	dress skirts that are no shorter than 3 inches above the knee;	dress pants with dress blouses. Being the Valley, where it is	always hot, a cotton-synthetic blend may be best. In addition to	solids and pinstripes, various plaids may be acceptable.	Charcoal, medium gray, steel gray, black, and navy blue are good	colors and all look good with a white blouse. Hosiery is	required with skirts at all times, along with dress shoes. Examples of inappropriate business	attire includes: anything sleeveless, denim clothing of any	kind, stirrup or spandex pants, shorts of any kind or length,	crop tops, hats, sundresses, leather pants, sandals, shoes that	show your toes, and sneakers.	Business Casual Attire for Women	Appropriate business casual attire for women includes: skirts,	which are no shorter than 3 inches above the knee; blouses,	sweaters, polo-style shirts, jumpsuits, khaki pants, which are	neither too loose nor too tight, and which are not too faded,	frayed or otherwise distressed. Boots, dressy sandals, and pumps	are examples of acceptable footwear.	Examples of inappropriate attire are: novelty tee shirts (those	with printed writing, slogans or numbers), shorts, spandex	pants, crop tops, tank or halter tops, sweatshirts, sweatpants,	hats, sundresses which are backless or have straps less than 1	inch in width, leather pants, and flip flops.	Business Attire for Men	The best colors for suits are navy through teal blue and	charcoal through light gray, followed by brown. Solid colors	are best but subtle checkered patterns and narrow pinstripes are	acceptable. 100% wool suits look and wear better than any other	material. Two-piece suits are perfectly acceptable.	Professional business attire for men includes: suits, sports	coats, dress pants, dress shirts with collars, dress shoes and	socks, and a tie.	Examples of inappropriate business attire includes: denim	clothing of any kind, Dockers® style pants, shorts of any kind	or length, hats, extremely casual shoe styles commonly worn,	sandals, and sneakers.	Business Casal Attire for Men Appropriate	business casual dress for men includes: dress slacks, Dockers®	style slacks, sports shirts, polo shirts, and sweaters. Clean	topsiders and loafers are examples of appropriate footwear. Examples of	inappropriate attire include: shorts, novelty tee shirts (those	with printed writing, slogans or numbers), sweatshirts,	sweatpants, tank tops, cropped tops, hats, and lip flops. In	summary, please keep in mind that clothes are not conservative	and proper for work if the fabric, style or fit is too revealing	or too casual. Business Casual is the opportunity to dress less	formally, but still keep a professional appearance. It is not an	opportunity to wear clothing better suited to the beach, home,	yard, gym or bar. Being a recent college graduate who received a bachelor \'s	degree is quite an accomplishment! It truly is a wonderful	feeling to know that the years of studying and researching have	finally paid off! Now what comes after this? Many students	choose to jump directly into the workforce once they have	graduated from college. However many others are not satisfied	having only earned a bachelors degree, they often set their	sights a career that will require a higher level of knowledge?	If your student identifies with the latter, then perhaps they	should consider graduate school. This is a big decision for a	student to make and there are several considerations to take	into account during this decision-making process. The first consideration is your	career goals. Does the field that want to enter reward or	require a graduate education? Graduate school should not be used	as a way to postpone finding a job. Decide what terminal degree	is necessary (Master, Doctorate). Decide what criteria are most	important in choosing a program. Attending graduate or	professional school means a huge investment in time and money. How to research graduate or	professional programs: Utilize	reference books and university folders in the Career	Information Center. Talk with	professionals in the field about their graduate school	experiences. Research	the ratings and accreditation of the schools. Write to	the schools of interest and obtain graduate catalogs,	admission and financial aid information, and inquire about a	school visit. Talk with	current and former students of graduate programs and ask for	their evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the	program. Attend	Graduate/Professional School Fair. If you are considering applying	to law, medical, dental, or health-related graduate or	professional schools, we recommend a visit to the	Office of Graduate Studies . The College of	Science and Engineering, also has a faculty member specifically	assigned to assist pre-medical students prepare to enter medical	school. University Drive - Edinburg, TX 78541-2999 Phone: 956-381-2243 Fax: 956-381-2244 You \'ve made it to	the interview stage! But before you step through that door, make	sure you know the basic steps of a successful job interview. Preparation Learn about the company and the position. Check out	their web site, use online corporate directories such as	www.hoovers.com or request information from the company \'s	public relations department. Your school \'s reference	librarian can help you track down all sorts of useful	information, such as the company \'s size, history, main	products and services, the names of top executives and	current news stories. Rehearse with mock interviews. Check with your school \'s	career planning center to see if they offer a program to	help you improve your interview skills. Double-check the time and location of the interview. If	it \'s in an area that \'s new to you, consult a map or take a \'test-run \' the day before to make sure you know how to get	there. Prepare what you want to say in the interview. Think	about your greatest strengths and weaknesses, your most	significant work or school experiences, your future plans	and your ideal job. Review your resume and think about how your experiences	can be matched up with the job \'s requirements. Interview Day Dress appropriately. Choose conservative	clothing and keep jewelry and accessories to a minimum. Be punctual. Arrive a little early to allow	yourself time to relax and focus. Bring along some basic interview tools:	extra copies of your resume and a pad of paper and pen. Take	notes on any interesting points or questions. Your notes	will come in handy when preparing for a second interview or	writing a follow-up letter. Be sure to listen actively throughout the	interview. It \'s easy to spend all your time planning your	answers, but remember—this is a conversation. Listening	carefully helps you to respond appropriately. Avoid generalities and clichés ( \"I \'m a	people-person \"). Give concrete examples when describing your	work experience. And always be positive. Don \'t be critical	of previous co-workers or bosses. The way you talk about	your former or current boss may be seen as an indication of	how you will talk about your future boss. Demonstrate that you have thought seriously	about this career path and this company by asking	intelligent questions about the position. Draw upon your	research about the company, or ask about the working	conditions, the chances for advancement and major projects	your prospective job would entail. Ask your interviewers for their business	cards to ensure that you have the proper contact information	when you follow up. The Follow-Up Afterward, send a follow-up letter. Thank	the interviewer for taking the time to speak with you and	let them know that you are still interested. Demonstrate	your interest by describing how could contribute to the	company \'s future. Review what you \'ve learned. What were the	strongest parts of your interview? What were the weakest?	Were you asked any questions you hadn \'t anticipated? And	what did you learn about this company or career track? Even	if you don \'t get the job, you can learn a lot from every	interview. Keep this outline in	mind, and you \'ll be ready to ace your next interview—and start	your new job! -- by Kay Peterson, Ph.D. Copyright © 2002 FastWeb, Inc. The Foundation was chartered in 1982 to	raise, manage and invest funds for charitable, educational,	and scientific purposes to benefit Pan American University,	and its mission remained the same after Pan American’s	merger with The University of Texas System. By maintaining an independent Board of	Trustees organized with operating committees, the Foundation	can effectively involve interested volunteers in its fund	raising efforts and create within them a sense of pride,	accomplishment, and ownership – all of which are critical	fund raising success. An advantage of being a private	independent organization is that it can maintain a long-term	perspective on the needs and priorities of UT-Pan American	beyond the outlook and tenure of any of its employees. As a private nonprofit organization,	the Foundation exists solely for the benefit of The	University of Texas-Pan American raising funds to create	endowments and to augment university programs. As such, it	operates in a politically neutral, less restrictive	environment and can carry out its mission efficiently and	effectively. It provides a vehicle for raising and managing	funds to supplement those that are appropriated by the	state. Its fundraising efforts have resulted in numerous	chairs and professorships and various endowed scholarships.	Recently, the Foundation has received a number of endowments	for the nursing and engineering programs, but is seeking to	provide resources to all disciplines within the University. All funds raised and managed by the	Foundation are used in accordance with donor wished to build	the academic, research, and public service programs of The	University of Texas-Pan American. The recipients of these	efforts are the students, faculty, local communities on both	sides of the border, the State of Texas, and in some cases	the nation. The Internal Revenue Service recognizes The University of	Texas-Pan American Foundation as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3)	charitable organization. Contributions to the University	through the Foundation by individuals, corporations and	other foundations are qualified for tax deduction. The	Foundation’s IRS identification number is 74-22496970. The University of	Texas Pan American © Copyright 2005. Yet, too often those are just	words to many people who end up finding themselves fixed	almost entirely on the present. Or they dream about the	future, but they do nothing about it. And so their dreams	seem at best illusive and at worst unattainable.” The University of Texas-Pan American	Foundation has a positive vision of the future for the	University. The Board of Trustees of this organization	represents local, state and national corporations and is out	there every day thinking about, dreaming about and	envisioning a brighter future for the University. Representing major and local	organizations- like: Southwestern Bell; IBC Bank; Wal-Mart;	H.E.B.; 2M Ranch; South Texas Health Center; Cantu	Construction Co.; A.G. Edwards & Sons; Talbot & Wong; Guerra	Brothers; J.R. The board members pictured on this page	exemplify leadership ability and real-world experience	characterized by high morals, values, principles and their	commitment to supporting high academic standards. With their help, the Foundation has	made great strides in raising, managing and investing funds	in recent years. The future for the University is indeed	bright and growing brighter because of their efforts. If you have an opportunity to visit	them, please lend a receptive ear. … They are working hard	to shape a positive future for our University. Our entire nation is better because of the values	and courage that were nurtured in the heart of this Valley.	My friend, Raul Yzaguirre, is an extraordinary man, a national	symbol of Hispanic empowerment and a warrior for equality. A	champion of unity and understanding among our diverse Hispanic	communities, he has nurtured leaders from Miami to L.A, from the	barrio to the boardroom. His life and	legacy of leadership will inspire a whole new generation of Hispanic	policy makers, civil rights advocates and government officials. In	the process, the Raul Yzaguirre Policy Institute and The University	of Texas-Pan American will literally change the face of a nation.”	Blandina Cárdenas	President	University of Texas-Pan American The University of	Texas - Pan American	Copyright 2005.
